Christian Education Director
(Part-time)
St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, ClaytonPurpose
To help the children and youth of St. Mark’s, together with their
families, grow in their relationship with God in Jesus Christ, to deepen
their faith and to equip them for using the gifts God has given them to
participate in the life and mission of the church.
Responsibilities
Work with the Pastor, church leaders, and committees to establish and
support the Christian Education ministry of St. Mark’s. Serve as a model
for the children and youth in their growing faith.
Specific Responsibilities include the following:
- Visit with all families involved in learning ministries to build
relationships and listen in order to improve children and youth
programming and participation in it.
- Research and oversee the selection and purchase of Sunday School
curriculum, Vacation Bible School program, and the Children’s
Christmas program (for Pre-Kindergarten through the 12th grade).
- Recruit new Sunday School teachers as needed with the assistance
of the Learning Committee and the Pastor; prepare new teachers; meet
with and assist all teachers to build relationships, listen and
incorporate feedback to maintain and grow the Sunday School program.
- Coordinate leadership for the Sunday School Openings.
- Coordinate and lead VBS and the Christmas program.
- Plan Confirmation with the Pastor and help teach it as
appropriate.
- Organize and lead the on-going Youth Program for 7th through
12th grades, including: coordinating events that include service,
witness, and social activities; participating in Southside Cluster
and Metro Coalition events; and enlisting the assistance of adult
volunteers to attend and help lead these events as needed.
- Plan, prepare, fundraise, and recruit adult chaperones for the
ELCA National Youth Gathering in New Orleans, July 18-22, 2012.
The CED will coordinate the planning and execution of the above
programs by:
- Providing centralized communication through phone calls, e-mail,
website, Facebook, and mailings;
- Preparing articles/announcements for the Voice and the weekly
bulletin that pertain to Christian education and youth;
- Administering those portions of the budget that pertain to
designated areas of Christian education and youth, in consultation
with the relevant committee and the Pastor;
- Acquiring and/or ordering supplies/equipment as needed;
- Serve as a staff member to the Learning Committee (non-voting);
- Attend Council, and local youth ministry meetings as needed;
- Teach classes as needed;
- Make timely monthly written reports to the Council;
- Attend weekly staff meetings with the Pastor; and
- Additional duties that may develop and be assigned by the
Pastor.
Pay and Time Commitment
The position is part-time and requires a commitment of 20 hours per
week, including Sunday mornings. Salary is commensurate with experience.
Accountability
The CED reports to the Pastor. The Pastor, in consultation with the
Executive Committee and the Learning Committee, will conduct a 3 month,
6 month and annual performance review.
Qualifications
The CED will be a highly organized individual and will have experience
and/or education commensurate with the job description. A Bachelor’s
degree is preferred.
