Why Lutheran? Naming the Gift
to the Church
Five Tuesdays beginning January 8
6:30 - 9:30pm
Course taught by Rev. Dr. Robert Kolb, Mission Professor
of Systematic Theology and Director of the Institute for Mission Studies
at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. Dr. Kolb is an editor of the recently
published, Book of Concord.
Questions the course will address are: Why
is Luther still so influential 500 years after he lived? What does he
have to say to North Americans today? What presuppositions shaped his
reading of Scripture and view of daily life?
The course looks at the
special, even unique ways he answered questions like: Who is God? What
is God really like? How does God work in the world? What does it mean to
be human? What does God expect of human beings? Who or what is
responsible for evil? How can we overcome the bad inside us and outside
us?
Cost is $68 for five sessions. Register online at

Lessons for Today from the
Church in Nazi Germany
Six Mondays: Jan. 14, 28, Feb. 11, 18, 25, March 10
7:00 - 9:30pm
Teacher for this course is Dr. Mark Ruff, Associate
Professor of History at St. Louis University. He has recently returned
from 15 months of extended research on this topic in Germany.
This course will examine the debates that have raged for decades
about the relationship between the major European churches and National
Socialism. Many have accused churches of doing too little to oppose Nazi
doctrine. This course looks at the wide spectrum of behavior - from
resistance to collaboration - that they Roman Catholic and German
Protestant churches displayed. It examines why German Protestants were
less likely to resist Nazi encroachments than German Catholics.
For the present: What can modern Christians learn from their conduct?
How can their mistakes be avoided? How should church leaders respond to
policies of state leaders that run contrary to Christian teachings?
Readings will consist of many short articles of 10 pages or less.
Tuition is $81.00.

Bread for the World Offering
of Letters Workshop
March 8
8:30am
God is moving in our time to liberate millions of people from
poverty and hunger. If we work together, we can turn the possibility of
ending hunger into a reality. This workshop is an opportunity for
members of your congregation or group to learn how to lobby Congress to
support hunger-fighting legislation. An offering of letters involves
organizing a group to learn about a hunger issue and then write letters
to Congress. This year thousands of committed citizens will lobby
Congress to assist our global neighbors who are living in extreme
poverty. Please consider joining us as we respond to our million of
brothers and sisters who are trying to survive on less than a dollar a
day.

The Living Last Supper is a vivid interpretation of Leonardo
DaVinci's famous painting The Last Supper and the internal wrestling of
the 12 disciples. The masterpiece captures the moment immediately
following Christ's announcement that one among them would betray him.
The expressions of the 12 disciples range in emotion from fear and
surprise to anger and disbelief. In the center sits Jesus in a
quiet calm. Each disciple in the painting will come to life and
share his internal struggles at this critical time in his life.
The dramatization explores what it means to the disciples through a
series of monologues, especially in significance to the meal being the
first Communion.
From out of the darkness steps each disciple,
speaking his mind as to why and who would be the one who will lead the
Roman soldiers to Jesus. The audience is privy to their thoughts
as they search for the betrayer among their brethren and within
themselves.
Some disciples are angered, others humble themselves to
the Lord, yet all of them glorify Christ, and in the end, each one asks
the heart wrenching question, "Is it I, Lord? Is it I?"
Faith’s drama
aims to help people understand that Jesus' chosen group consisted of
ordinary men, as fallible and filled with doubts as men today. Attendees
can feel a sense of pain the disciples felt as Jesus spoke of his death
but also come away with a oneness God intended with Holy Communion.
For a last time, Jesus passes the bread and the cup to his disciples.
Communion then is served to the entire congregation.

feet, and are available for $15 for the 2008 growing season. Some seeds
and plants will be available to gardeners.
Gardeners are encouraged to share their excess produce with neighbors
or one of the area food pantries. Last year, the garden produced
in excess of 700 lbs. of vegetables.
If an individual does not want the responsibility of maintaining an
individual plot, but would still like to get involved, we will be
planting some vegetables in common areas. These will be cared for
communally.
For an application or more information, contact Garden Director Diane
Runyan.

COMMUNITY CELEBRATES WITH US
NEW ORGAN AND CHOIR RECITAL
We dedicated the new Johannus organ during a worship service in January.
Now we'll introduce it to the broader community in concert.
Guest

the organ's capabilities, ranging from Brahms and Bach to more
contemporary composers. Mr. Collins will offer commentary on the organ's
features as he plays. Ivy's chancel choir, under Marsha Medley's

congregation will participate in
